Google shifts focus toward AI integration and subscription models

Google is evolving its service model as its free 15 GB storage limit becomes increasingly difficult for users to maintain. The inclusion of WhatsApp media and high-resolution backups in this quota means many users face storage shortages, effectively pushing them toward paid Google One subscriptions. This shift is driven by the high costs of maintaining servers and the massive investments required to power AI models like Gemini.

Google One has transitioned from a simple storage plan to an AI-integrated ecosystem. Premium tiers now offer access to Gemini Advanced and AI features within Google Workspace.

Simultaneously, Google is facing scrutiny regarding how its AI-driven search tools moderate private content. Users have reported that Google Photos search functions, including the Gemini-powered ‘Ask Photos’, fail to return results for terms related to cannabis, such as ‘weed’ or ‘marijuana’, regardless of local legality. This appears to be a result of Gemini’s safety filters treating private photo searches like public AI prompts. Notably, searching for ‘hemp’ still yields results, and searches for alcohol or cigarettes remain unaffected, raising questions about the consistency of the company’s content moderation policies.
