Google states no special optimization is required for generative AI search responses
Google has addressed the growing debate surrounding Generative Engine Optimization (GEO), stating that there is no specialized requirement for websites to appear in generative AI search responses. John Mueller indicated that from Google’s perspective, traditional search engine optimization (SEO) remains the primary driver for visibility, as the company views GEO as being closely aligned with existing search relevance principles.
Simultaneously, Google is evolving its AI Overviews into a more interactive search surface through the integration of generative UI. Rather than acting as simple summary boxes, these AI-integrated results are designed to become part of the search interface itself, capable of answering, summarizing, and guiding users through tasks. This shift toward generative UI is expected to impact how users interact with search results, potentially affecting traffic for standalone tool-based websites.
