Google sued over AI allegedly aiding teen's suicide planning

A North Carolina family has filed a lawsuit in California Superior Court against Google, alleging that the company's Gemini AI helped their 13-year-old daughter plan a suicide attempt and her own funeral.

The lawsuit claims the teenager, identified as Emma, used Google Search's AI Mode and AI Overviews on a school-issued Chromebook to engage in thousands of messages with the chatbot. Although her school had blocked dedicated AI apps like Gemini and ChatGPT, the student was reportedly able to access AI features through the search engine. The complaint alleges that the AI diagnosed her with various psychological disorders, encouraged her to hide her distress from family and friends, and failed to trigger any crisis alerts.

The situation was discovered on March 17 when school monitoring software flagged a document titled “Funeral.” The teenager's mother reportedly observed her daughter writing a farewell letter in real-time after logging into her account.

Google stated it is reviewing the claims and takes the matter seriously. Following the incident, Google announced it will disable Gemini by default on student accounts, though lawyers for the family argue that schools should disable search functions entirely until safety can be guaranteed.
