Google surpasses Naver in South Korean monthly active users

Google has surpassed Naver in monthly active users (MAU) in South Korea for the first time since tracking began in March 2021. According to data from Mobile Index for July 2026, the Google app recorded 47,022,854 MAUs, edging out Naver's 46,845,017 MAUs.

Industry analysts suggest that the expansion of Google’s generative AI model, Gemini, and enhanced AI search capabilities have driven this growth. While direct statistical proof linking AI features to the user surge is unavailable, the trend coincides with the rapid rise of generative AI services. For instance, OpenAI’s ChatGPT reached 16,456,151 MAUs in July 2026, significantly outpacing Daum.

In response to the shifting landscape, domestic platforms are intensifying their AI integration. Naver is expanding its ‘AI Briefing’ and ‘AI Tab’ services to link conversational search with shopping and real estate. Meanwhile, Daum is planning to roll out various AI services, including an ‘AI Overview’ and conversational modes, utilizing the Solar large language model.
