Google AI Overviews disrupt SEO and publisher revenue models
The landscape of search engine optimization is shifting as Google AI Overviews become more prevalent. Research from BrightEdge indicates that AI Overviews appeared in approximately 48% of tracked queries over the past year, up from 30%. Notably, only about 17% of the sources cited in these AI-generated summaries also appear in Google’s organic top 10 rankings, suggesting that traditional SEO strategies may no longer guarantee visibility.
In Malaysia, AI adoption among businesses has risen to 38%, up from 27% a year ago. However, most adopters rely on basic chatbots, with only 19% maintaining a formal strategy for scaling AI use. SEO experts warn that businesses must adapt to how AI systems summarize information to avoid missing customers who no longer click through to websites.
Economic shifts are also occurring between Google and publishers. Top 100 media companies spent $113 million on paid search in July 2026, a significant increase that may be driven by the need to recover traffic lost to AI-driven zero-click searches. Meanwhile, Google is piloting an ‘AI Contribution’ program to pay publishers for content used in Gemini and AI Overviews, though the transparency of these payments remains limited.
On the technical side, AI-related crawler traffic is growing, with Cloudflare reporting that AI training accounted for 52% of all crawler requests as of June 2026.
