Google tests AI-generated summaries in Discover feed

Google is testing a new feature in its Discover feed called ‘Dive deeper’ that introduces an artificial intelligence-generated summary layer between the user and original media content. Announced by Robby Stein, Vice President of Product for Google Search, the experiment aims to facilitate topic exploration and content discovery on the web.

Unlike the current Discover functionality, which directs users straight to a media outlet's article, this new button opens a Google-hosted screen. This screen provides a brief AI-generated synthesis of the topic, accompanied by a disclaimer stating that the content is automated and may contain errors. Following the summary, Google will provide prominent links to original news stories, community reactions, and related information from various sources.

The company plans to begin testing this function with video content and will experiment with different designs in the coming weeks. Google has not yet specified the geographic scope of the test, the number of participating users, or whether the feature will eventually be rolled out globally to the Discover platform.
