Google tests AI summaries in Discover and publisher monetization

Google is testing new artificial intelligence features that alter how users interact with web content and how publishers are compensated. Through a new feature in Google Discover called “Dive deeper”, the company is experimenting with AI-generated summaries that provide a topical overview before a user clicks through to a publisher's original article. While links to original reporting and community reactions remain, the AI summary serves as the initial point of contact, a shift that raises concerns for publishers regarding potential traffic loss.

Simultaneously, Google is piloting a program called the “AI Contribution Pilot” to address the economic impact of AI on content creators. This initiative, managed through Google Search Console, aims to remunerate a limited group of publishers when their content provides a “significant contribution” to AI-generated responses. The program seeks to establish a model for rewarding information producers whose work informs AI Overviews and other AI-driven search experiences, even when those experiences do not result in a direct click to the original website.
