Google tests direct Flipkart shopping via Gemini AI in India

Google is testing a new feature in India that allows users to purchase products directly through its Gemini and AI Mode interfaces. The pilot program features a ‘Buy’ button on selected Flipkart listings, which redirects users to the Flipkart checkout process without requiring them to leave the AI chat interface.

The current test is limited to a specific group of users and a narrow range of products, primarily smartphones, electronics, and mobile accessories. While Amazon products may appear in search results, only Flipkart items currently support the direct purchase functionality. This move follows Google’s 2024 investment of approximately $350 million in Flipkart.

This initiative is part of a broader industry trend where AI companies, including OpenAI, are evolving from providing search results and recommendations to facilitating direct transactions. Google is also developing the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), an open standard designed to allow AI agents to interact with retailers across various stages of the shopping journey, including payment and order fulfillment. A wider rollout is expected in late October, ahead of India’s major festive shopping season.
