Google tests new security and facial recognition features in Android 17
Google is testing several new features in the Android 17 QPR3 Beta 2 aimed at improving device security and usability.
To combat smartphone theft, a new security measure could prevent thieves from quickly disabling connectivity. The feature would block access to Wi-Fi, mobile data, and Bluetooth settings while the device is locked, requiring a passcode or biometric authentication to change them. This is intended to keep stolen devices connected to networks to facilitate tracking.
Additionally, a new setting titled ‘Brighten screen in low light’ has been discovered. This software-based approach aims to improve facial recognition performance on Pixel devices in dark environments by automatically increasing screen brightness to assist the camera, rather than relying on specialized infrared hardware.
