Google to end Google Assistant on Android devices Sep 4 2026

Google announced that the Google Assistant will be discontinued on eligible Android smartphones, tablets and related accessories beginning on 4 September 2026. The company will replace the voice assistant with its Gemini AI model, which will become the default assistant on supported devices.

The rollout will be phased over several weeks, so the service will not disappear from all devices on a single day. Once the update reaches a device, users will no longer be able to use or switch back to Google Assistant. Affected hardware includes Android phones, tablets, Wear OS smartwatches, compatible headphones/earbuds and Android Auto projected devices.

Exceptions are cars that have Google built‑in, Google TV, Google Home speakers and smart displays, which will continue to run the original Assistant beyond the cutoff. Devices that do not meet Gemini’s minimum system requirements or are in regions where Gemini is not yet available will retain the legacy Assistant until a later date. Gemini can be invoked with the usual “Hey Google” voice command or by a long press of the power button.
