Google to invest 13 billion euros in Finland's digital infrastructure
Google has announced a 13 billion euro investment in Finland's digital infrastructure over the next two years, marking the company's largest single investment in Europe to date. The funds are intended to support growing demand for services such as search, Google Maps, and AI tools like Gemini.
A central component of the plan involves securing carbon-free energy. Google has signed a 22-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with Fortum to support the life extension and capacity increase of the Loviisa nuclear power plant. Additionally, the company has secured onshore wind energy through Valorem, bringing its total supported wind capacity in Finland to 629 MW, and a 94 MW battery system near Kajaani expected to operate by late 2027.
The investment is projected to contribute 3.6 billion euros annually to Finland's GDP and support over 37,000 jobs nationally during the initial construction phases. Google is also allocating 31 million euros to local communities for education and AI retraining programs, alongside environmental initiatives such as reforestation and wetland restoration near its data center sites.
