Google to invest $17 billion in Wyoming data center campus

Google has announced plans to invest approximately $17 billion to develop its first data center campus in Laramie County, Wyoming. The project follows Google’s acquisition of an unfinished data center site in southeastern Wyoming from Crusoe, a Denver-based developer. The takeover reportedly occurred after Google raised concerns regarding construction timelines and costs under Crusoe’s management.

The facility is designed to support artificial intelligence workloads and will feature a 702-megawatt fuel cell system provided by Bloom Energy. To mitigate environmental impact, the project will utilize carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology, with emissions intended to be sequestered at Tallgrass Energy’s Eastern Wyoming Sequestration Hub. Additionally, the campus will employ air cooling to minimize pressure on local water supplies.

Google is partnering with several entities for the development, including Tallgrass Energy, Black Hills Energy, American Electric Power (AEP), and Related Digital. While the Wyoming project faces local political scrutiny and community opposition regarding data center expansion, Google remains in a partnership with Crusoe for a separate data center project near Amarillo, Texas.
