Google to invest $500M in Dominican Republic submarine cables
Google is investing at least $500 million in the Dominican Republic to develop a new submarine fiber optic cable infrastructure. The project aims to establish the country as a strategic digital connectivity hub linking the United States, South America, the Caribbean, and Europe.
According to the Dominican government, the first cable is expected to be connected by the end of 2024, landing in the Cabeza de Toro area. Two additional links are scheduled to become operational in October 2027, with the final two cables expected to function during 2028. The infrastructure includes the Alisios, Canoa, and Ola Luz cables, as well as a branch of the Firmina system.
This expansion is intended to significantly increase data transmission capacity, potentially multiplying it by up to ten times. Officials noted that the project will increase the number of direct cable connections to the United States from one to three, fostering an environment conducive to data centers and artificial intelligence industries.
