Google to launch AI chip prototype satellite via Project Suncatcher
Google is launching an experimental satellite, named MVP, as part of Project Suncatcher to test the viability of artificial intelligence (AI) computing in low-Earth orbit. The mission, scheduled for launch on October 1, 2026, will utilize a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket via the Transporter-18 mission. Developed in partnership with Planet Labs, the refrigerator-sized prototype carries four Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) with the combined computing power of a single traditional data center server.
The primary objective is to evaluate how specialized AI hardware performs under extreme space conditions, including intense radiation, vacuum-induced thermal fluctuations, and the physical stresses of launch. To manage heat in a vacuum where air cooling is impossible, Google is testing a system that combines heat pipe tubing with radiators. Due to these cooling limitations, the chips will operate in short bursts of approximately 15 minutes before requiring a shutdown period.
Project Suncatcher explores the long-term potential of orbital data centers to alleviate terrestrial energy and land constraints. By utilizing solar energy in orbit, which can be up to eight times more efficient than on Earth, Google aims to build scalable machine learning infrastructure. Future milestones include launching two additional satellites by 2027 to test high-bandwidth laser communication systems between orbital units.
