Google to launch experimental AI chip satellite via SpaceX

Google is launching an experimental satellite, part of Project Suncatcher, to test the viability of artificial intelligence computing in orbit. The mission, involving a partnership with Planet Labs, is scheduled for launch on October 1st via a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California.

The refrigerator-sized prototype, known as the MVP satellite, will carry four Google Trillium Tensor Processing Units (TPUs). The mission aims to evaluate how this specialized hardware handles the extreme conditions of space, including launch vibrations, radiation exposure, and the challenges of thermal management in a vacuum. Due to the lack of atmospheric airflow, the satellite utilizes a specialized cooling system involving thermal materials, aluminum, copper, and radiator plates. To prevent overheating, the chips are expected to operate for approximately 15 minutes before undergoing a thermal shutdown to cool down.

This initiative serves as a research moonshot to explore whether solar-powered satellite constellations could eventually host large-scale, scalable AI data centers. In low Earth orbit, satellites can access nearly continuous sunlight, potentially generating up to eight times more energy than terrestrial solar panels. If successful, Google intends to continue testing, with plans for further satellite deployments in 2027 to evaluate high-bandwidth laser communication for interconnected TPU clusters.
