Google launches Project Suncatcher to test AI computing in orbit

Google is launching its first experimental satellite under ‘Project Suncatcher’ to test the feasibility of operating artificial intelligence data centers in low Earth orbit. The prototype satellite, scheduled to launch via a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket on the Transporter-18 mission from Vandenberg Space Force Base, will carry Google’s Tensor Processing Units (TPUs).

The initiative aims to address the growing energy and space demands of terrestrial AI infrastructure. Alphabet notes that satellites in orbit can access near-constant sunlight, potentially generating up to eight times more solar power than on Earth. The mission will evaluate how specialized AI chips perform under the extreme conditions of space, including radiation, thermal management challenges, and the physical stresses of launch.

In collaboration with Planet Labs, Google plans to expand this research in 2027 by launching two additional prototype satellites. These future missions are expected to test advanced capabilities such as laser-based communication between orbital units to create a scalable, interconnected machine learning infrastructure in space.
