Google to incentivize foldable device app optimization
Google is taking active steps to improve how Android applications and games function on foldable devices. During the Android Developer Summit, the company announced that starting in 2027, the Google Play Store will evaluate how well apps are optimized for foldable screens. Applications that demonstrate high-quality adaptation will receive increased visibility and prominent placement within the store.
To assist developers, Google is introducing new tools, such as the Compose adaptive skill, which uses AI to help automatically adapt mobile interfaces for various form factors, including foldables, tablets, laptops, and automotive screens. These tools aim to reduce development costs by automating tasks like adding keyboard shortcuts, mouse hover effects, and responsive layouts.
While Google has not yet specified whether non-compliant apps will face direct penalties, the company intends to shift foldable optimization from an optional task to a key factor in app distribution success.
