Google to replace Assistant with Gemini on Android starting September 2026

Google has announced that it will begin phasing out Google Assistant on compatible Android devices starting September 4, 2026, replacing it with its generative AI assistant, Gemini. The transition is expected to be a gradual rollout lasting several weeks.

The change affects a wide range of devices within the Android ecosystem, including smartphones, tablets, Wear OS smartwatches, compatible headphones, and Android Auto when used via a smartphone. Once a device has been migrated to Gemini, users will not be able to revert to the previous Google Assistant experience.

However, certain hardware will remain unaffected by this specific timeline. Google Assistant will continue to function on vehicles with Google built-in, as well as on dedicated smart home hardware such as Google Home speakers, smart displays, and Google TV devices.
