Google Gemini undergoes major updates to Skills, Assistant, and Wallet integration

Google is implementing significant updates to its Gemini AI ecosystem. A major structural change involves replacing the custom AI assistant feature, Gems, with a more flexible system called Skills. This transition is scheduled to begin on November 17, 2026, for personal accounts, with a phased rollout to Workspace accounts through 2027. Skills will allow users to trigger specific AI capabilities within any chat using a slash (/) or @ symbol.

Simultaneously, Google is transitioning its mobile assistant strategy by replacing Google Assistant with Gemini as the default on Android devices. In some regions, including the US and Europe, the option to revert to the legacy Google Assistant has already been removed in recent app updates.

Furthermore, Gemini is expanding its integration with Google services. The AI can now access information from Google Wallet, such as loyalty cards and boarding passes. In the US, through integration with Plaid, Gemini can also analyze bank account data to provide monthly spending summaries and budgeting assistance. Additionally, NotebookLM is being rebranded as Gemini Notebook to align with the broader brand identity.
