Google to replace Google Assistant with Gemini on mobile devices

Google is officially transitioning its mobile ecosystem from the legacy Google Assistant to its Gemini AI model. Starting September 4, 2026, the company will begin a mandatory transition that will affect Android phones, tablets, and paired accessories, such as Wear OS watches and earbuds. Once the update is implemented, users will no longer be able to switch back to the original Google Assistant.

In addition to this major shift, Google is expanding the Gemini ecosystem through various updates. Reports suggest the development of Gemini Proactive Assistance, a feature potentially debuting with the Pixel 11 series that would allow the AI to offer information based on device context without direct user prompts. Other developments include the potential replacement of the free 'Gems' customization feature with a paid 'Skills' model by October 20, 2026, and the testing of a dedicated Gemini button within the Chrome Android interface to improve accessibility.

Google is also advancing its specialized AI tools, such as the Gemma Translator prototype for offline use and the evolution of Gemini Notebook (formerly NotebookLM), which may soon allow users to transform research materials into custom applications.
