Google to restrict Search access for schools that ban AI

Google has announced a policy change regarding its artificial intelligence tools in educational settings. The company stated that because search and AI are deeply integrated, schools that choose to opt out of AI features will also lose access to Google Search.

In response to concerns from educators and policymakers, Google will now make AI products, such as the Gemini assistant, off by default for K-12 student accounts. Administrators must explicitly enable these tools for use. This move reverses a previous decision from August to have Gemini enabled by default in Google Classrooms.

Many school districts, including those in New York City and Los Angeles, have already implemented bans on generative AI due to concerns regarding student development, safety, and the potential for misinformation. While Google maintains that Gemini can support instruction, critics argue that AI usage may degrade critical thinking skills and impact testing outcomes.
