Google to transition ChromeOS to Googlebook OS by 2034
Google has announced a long-term transition for its laptop ecosystem, moving from ChromeOS toward a new platform called Googlebook OS. ChromeOS will continue to receive regular updates and security patches until mid-2034. For qualifying devices with a 10-year support lifecycle that extends beyond 2034, Google has committed to supporting a migration to the new operating system.
Googlebook OS is designed to merge the desktop foundations of ChromeOS with the Android technology stack. This shift aims to improve integration between laptops, smartphones, and tablets, while enabling native Android app support and deeper integration of Gemini AI. The new architecture is intended to reduce redundant engineering efforts between the two platforms and accelerate the deployment of AI features.
While many newer Chromebook models may be eligible for a direct upgrade to Googlebook OS, Google has not yet released a specific list of compatible devices. The transition is expected to impact the education and enterprise sectors, where Chromebooks are widely deployed. Early Googlebook hardware is expected to feature higher specifications, such as touchscreens and increased RAM, to support the new OS requirements.
