Google and the United Kingdom government have launched ‘Operation Blue Skies’, a 30-month project aimed at reducing the climate impact of aviation by preventing the formation of persistent contrails.

Using artificial intelligence, the initiative will predict atmospheric conditions in the Shanwick airspace over the North Atlantic where contrails are most likely to form. During two four-month testing windows in the 2026–27 and 2027–28 winters, air traffic controllers may instruct commercial flights to adjust their altitude by up to 2,000 feet to avoid these zones. While these adjustments may slightly increase fuel consumption, experts suggest the climate benefits will outweigh the costs.

Contrails—formed when hot jet exhaust meets cold, humid air—can create artificial clouds that trap heat. Scientists estimate that contrail-induced warming accounts for approximately one-third of aviation’s total climate impact. The £5 million project involves a consortium including NATS, the Met Office, Imperial College London, and the University of Cambridge to evaluate the effectiveness of AI-driven flight rerouting.
