Google updates AI Overviews to expand automatically in search results

Google is testing a new interface for its AI Overviews that automatically expands AI-generated summaries for certain search queries. Previously, these summaries appeared as truncated text blocks requiring users to click a “Show more” button to view the full content. Under the new implementation, the summaries deploy dynamically in their entirety, occupying a significant portion of the screen.

This change pushes traditional organic search results further down the page, often below the fold. The update also includes the default appearance of the “Ask anything” conversational search box. While Google has confirmed these dynamic expansions are occurring on an undisclosed number of queries, the company noted a safeguard: if a user begins scrolling the page, the automatic expansion is canceled to avoid disrupting navigation.

Web publishers and SEO experts have expressed concern that this shift toward AI-driven answers may lead to a significant decline in organic traffic to external websites, as users may find the information they need directly within the Google interface without clicking through to source links.
