Google updates Android Auto with direct vehicle icon customization

Google is rolling out a server-side update for Google Maps on the Android Auto platform that allows users to customize their driving avatar directly via the vehicle's infotainment display. Previously, changing the vehicle icon from the standard blue arrow required settings adjustments on a connected smartphone. This update enables drivers to select and adjust vehicle designs while in the car, reducing the need to handle a mobile device during navigation.

Additionally, recent Android Auto updates have caused layout changes for some users, specifically those with wide displays, where the taskbar has moved from the bottom of the screen to the side. While the taskbar cannot be moved back to the bottom, users can adjust the layout via the settings menu. Options such as ‘Media closer to driver’ or ‘Navigation closer to driver’ allow for customized placement of media controls and navigation views to improve accessibility.
