Google updates Android Auto and Android Automotive interfaces
Google is implementing significant updates to its automotive software ecosystems. For Android Auto, the rollout of version 18.0 stable introduces the “Cielo” UI architecture, featuring new motion scaling animations and Google Sans Flex variable typography. This update also includes Samsung-specific One UI Quick Settings toggles and enhanced enterprise Work Profile controls, allowing drivers to manage notifications directly from the console.
Additionally, Google is redesigning the Android Automotive operating system. This overhaul includes a modernized Google Play Store that adapts to various cockpit screen formats, such as horizontal widescreen and vertical displays. The new interface will feature curated collections and a functional separation of apps based on vehicle status, offering different recommendations when the car is parked versus when it is in motion. New compatible applications include web browsers like Firefox and Chrome, as well as various streaming and gaming services, which are restricted to use only when the vehicle is stationary for safety.
Technical refinements are also underway for Android Auto, including a fix for a bug where the mobile network signal indicator would disappear from the display, and the availability of developer settings to manage wireless connectivity and video resolution.
