Google updates Android Auto with vehicle customization and bug fixes

Google is rolling out several updates to its Android Auto ecosystem to improve user experience and interface functionality.

One significant update to Google Maps allows drivers to customize their vehicle avatar directly from the Android Auto screen. Previously, users had to access the Google Maps app on their smartphones to change the navigation icon from the standard blue arrow to a specific vehicle design and color. This new ‘Vehicle Avatar’ option is being integrated into the in-car navigation settings, providing greater convenience and safety by reducing the need to handle a mobile device while driving.

Additionally, Google is addressing a cosmetic bug in Android Auto that caused the cellular signal strength icon to disappear from the app bar. While the absence of the icon did not impact core services like calling or messaging, it made it difficult for users to monitor connectivity in remote or underground areas. A fix for this issue is currently being rolled out to beta users and is expected to reach production devices in future updates.
