Google updates Gemini Notebook usage limits to computation-based system

Google is transitioning Gemini Notebook (formerly NotebookLM) from a fixed daily usage limit to a dynamic, computation-based system. This change, expected to take effect in early September, replaces the previous model of set daily limits per function with a system that calculates resource consumption based on the complexity of prompts, chat length, the number of sources used, and the intensity of specific tools.

Under the new system, usage quotas will refresh every five hours rather than once every 24 hours. To help users manage their capacity, Google is introducing an indicator on the chat screen to show real-time usage. For highly intensive tasks, such as generating Video Overviews or Slide Decks, a ‘Generate later’ option will allow users to schedule content creation for when their limits reset.

Subscribers to Google AI Pro will receive up to four times the capacity of free users. While the five-hour refresh cycle may offer more flexibility for casual users, the computational model means power users processing large volumes of data may reach their limits more quickly due to the variable nature of the resource consumption.
