Google introduces Preferred Sources button and AI-driven feed customization
Google has introduced several new personalization features across its Search, Discover, and Google News services to give users more control over their content feeds and help publishers maintain traffic.
A central feature is the “Preferred Sources” button, which publishers can embed directly on their websites. This allows readers to mark a publication as a favorite with a single tap. Once selected, content from these preferred sources will appear more frequently in Google Search results, including Top Stories, AI Overviews, and AI Mode. Google reports that users are twice as likely to click through to a preferred source compared to standard results, and over 600,000 unique sources have already been selected during testing.
Additionally, Google is rolling out natural language customization for the Discover feed. Users can now use a text-based interface, similar to a chatbot, to specify which topics they want to see more or less of. For example, a user could request more content on sustainable kitchen renovations while asking to see fewer product news updates.
Finally, the update includes new customization options for Google News on Android, allowing users to tailor their daily audio news briefings to specific topics of interest.
