Google Wallet develops new QR code payment feature for Alipay+
Google is developing a new QR code payment feature for Google Wallet that could allow Android users to make payments abroad via the Alipay+ network. An analysis of the Google Wallet Android app revealed resource strings for a “Traveler QR” feature, which would enable users to scan merchant QR codes and complete transactions using a Visa or Mastercard saved in their Google Wallet.
Alipay+ currently operates across more than 100 markets and serves approximately 1.8 billion users through 40 partner wallets, including services like PayPay in Japan and GCash in Asia. The development suggests expanded cross-border payment capabilities for Google Wallet users. Early testing environments involving a DBS-hosted domain suggest Singapore may be an initial launch market, though the feature also appears in a Japan-focused context.
Separately, code analysis indicates Google is also working on increasing flexibility for standard contactless payments. A new “Tap to pay” verification setting may allow users more leeway between identity verifications for routine transactions, similar to the current functionality used for public transit payments.
