Google Wallet expands digital passport support to Italy and Ireland

Google Wallet is rolling out new features for Android users, including support for digital passports, referred to as ‘ID pass’ within the application. Italy and Ireland are joining a group of supported nations that includes Brazil, Singapore, Taiwan, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

To register a digital passport, users must navigate to the ‘IDs & personal info’ section, scan the passport data page and its integrated NFC chip, and complete a facial video verification. While the US already utilizes these digital IDs for TSA security checks, the specific use cases for Italy and Ireland are yet to be determined.

Additionally, Google is introducing an in-app notification feed. A new bell icon appearing on the home screen allows users to access updates regarding their saved items in the digital wallet. These updates are being deployed via server-side releases, meaning they do not require a manual app store download.
