Google withholds Dhruv Rathee YouTube video in India
Google informed the Delhi High Court that it has withheld a YouTube video by influencer Dhruv Rathee within India. The company stated the action follows an order from the Centre’s Grievance Appellate Committee (GAC) regarding allegations that the content is defamatory and hurts religious sentiments.
The video, published on March 21, was described by petitioner Amita Sachdeva as containing “false, misleading, and provocative statements” insulting Hindu deities. While the video is currently restricted in India, a legal request for a global injunction remains pending before a division bench of the High Court.
Sachdeva had previously filed grievances with YouTube’s Resident Grievance Officer and the Delhi Police, alleging that the GAC failed to meet statutory timelines for deciding appeals. The court has adjourned the matter until September 3.
