Google's $2.1 bn Torsboda Data Center Deal Sparks Political Debate in Sweden

Google has offered to purchase the industrial park Torsboda in the municipalities of Sundsvall and Timrå for roughly 2.1 billion Swedish kronor. The transaction includes a purchase price of about 911 million SEK, repayment of loans around 286 million SEK, and additional costs and community investments of roughly 924 million SEK. Google intends to build a data centre on the site, subject to Swedish environmental and water‑use regulations.

The proposal has triggered a heated political dispute. The Center Party supports the deal, citing potential job creation and regional growth, while the Moderates, Left Party, Christian Democrats and some local representatives question the promised number of jobs, the impact on electricity prices and the lack of clear long‑term commitments from Google. Timrå’s municipal council is set to vote on the agreement, and Sundsvall has postponed its decision pending further information. The controversy highlights tensions between attracting large tech investments and safeguarding local economic and environmental interests.
