Major Publishers Consider Blocking Google Over AI Search Traffic Decline

Leading news publishers including USA Today, Politico, Reuters, The Economist, People, Time and the forum Reddit are evaluating whether to block Google’s crawlers or AI‑generated search overviews. Data cited by the Wall Street Journal and Semrush show organic referral traffic from Google falling sharply – 18 % to 31 % for outlets such as USA Today and Politico, and up to an 85 % drop for Business Insider. Reddit’s $60 million‑per‑year content‑licence for AI training is up for renewal, and the company’s stock fell about 6 % after the news. Publishers argue that AI “answers” keep users on the search page, slashing ad revenue and threatening the traditional web‑traffic‑for‑advertising model.

Google maintains that its AI features still generate billions of weekly clicks and offers opt‑out controls, but the trade‑off is that blocking crawlers could also cut remaining search‑traffic visibility. The UK Competition and Markets Authority has ordered Google to test mechanisms that let publishers opt out of AI features without losing their normal search rankings. In the second quarter of 2026, publisher ad supply dropped roughly 40 % while Google search ad revenue rose 17 %, underscoring the growing economic tension between the tech giant and the media industry.
