Google's Android 17 adds split‑screen gaming mode for foldable phones
Google announced Android 17 on June 16, introducing a dedicated gaming mode for foldable devices. When a compatible game is launched on a folded phone, the screen divides 50/50: the upper half displays the game and the lower half becomes a virtual gamepad that emulates a full physical controller (D‑pad, thumbsticks, A/B/X/Y, shoulder buttons, Start).
The gamepad layout can be customized (twin‑stick inline or staggered, size options, light/dark themes, haptic feedback) and automatically hides for touch‑only games or when an external Bluetooth/USB controller is connected. Google will let manufacturers fine‑tune the layout to match their screen dimensions. Details were first shared by Android Community Engagement Manager Mishaal Rahman on the Android Gaming subreddit. The feature is expected to ship with the final release of Android 17 in the coming months.
