Google's Plan to Release 32 Million Sterile Mosquitoes in Florida Draws Public Opposition

Google, through its Debug program, has applied to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for a permit to release 32 million Wolbachia‑infected sterile male Culex quinquefasciatus mosquitoes in Florida over two years, with a similar release slated for California. The technique, known as the Sterile Insect Technique, aims to suppress mosquito populations that transmit West Nile virus and other diseases.

The public comment period closed on June 5, receiving more than 2,700 comments, many expressing concern about ecological impacts and the involvement of a tech company in genetic modification. Critics questioned potential effects on wildlife and human health, while university experts noted that sterile males do not bite and are unlikely to increase nuisance. The method has been used in Brazil, the Cayman Islands, Panama and India to combat dengue and Zika.

Google and the EPA have not provided details on specific release sites or timelines.
