Goré hit by record rainfall and severe flooding
The city of Goré is facing severe material and agricultural damage following record-breaking rainfall between August 14 and 16, 2026. The area recorded 188.7 mm of rain in 72 hours, the highest level ever documented locally.
According to the ANADER departmental service, heavy rains and strong winds caused several homes to collapse, submerged residential areas, and damaged road networks, making many routes impassable due to uprooted trees and standing water. The central market was also heavily impacted, with shops and stalls flooded overnight. Local merchant representative Mahamat Saleh Moussa reported losses totaling several million CFA francs.
The agricultural sector has suffered significant hits, particularly to millet and sorghum crops. An ANADER storage facility was also flooded, exposing tons of seeds and fertilizer to water. Local officials, including Mayor Mbaikoua Etienne, have noted that the situation is worsened by the occupation of natural drainage paths. The mayor has issued a seven-day deadline for individuals to vacate certain market spaces to allow for urgent drainage interventions. Agricultural experts have warned that these rains may compromise the current farming campaign, especially with more precipitation forecasted.
