Fatal electrocutions reported during religious processions in India

Tragic electrical accidents occurred during religious processions in Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, resulting in multiple fatalities and injuries.

In Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, three young men—Vicky (18), Lucky (17), and their cousin Chandan (21)—were killed when an iron railing on a DJ system made contact with an 11,000-volt high-tension wire during a Durga idol immersion procession. Nine others, including a police officer, were injured. Following the incident, angry residents staged protests, causing a kilometer-long traffic jam and damaging a bus near the BRD Medical College. In response, authorities suspended a junior engineer and two police officers, dismissed a lineman, and formed a three-member investigation committee.

In Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, two individuals, identified as Vikas Rajput (22) and Prince Chauhan (23), died after a procession came into contact with 11 KV power lines. More than ten others were injured. Local residents alleged that the danger of low-hanging wires had been raised in a prior Peace Committee meeting, but no corrective action was taken by the electricity department. Investigations into the circumstances of the Jabalpur incident are ongoing.
