Balkan legal updates: Sentencings and expiring statutes of limitations

In Bosnia and Herzegovina, Goran Mirković has been sentenced to two years in prison by the Supreme Court of Republika Srpska for the 2019 killing of his father-in-law, Milan Mudrinić. The court ruled that Mirković acted with significantly reduced responsibility while exceeding the limits of self-defense during an argument over debt. Mirković is also ordered to pay 5,000 KM in damages to the victim's daughter and his wife.

In Croatia, legal proceedings regarding a 1999 shooting at Star’s Caffei in Zagreb face significant delays. The Zagreb County Court has suspended proceedings against Krešimir Gilje for the wounding of two individuals due to the statute of limitations. However, the primary charge against Gilje for the murder of Mirko Rimac is also approaching its expiration on October 9. Defense lawyers have challenged the prosecution, while the court continues to navigate procedural delays and requests for the recusal of prosecutors.

Separately, in Zagreb, Neven Mileusnić has received a five-and-a-half-year prison sentence for the attempted murder of Zvjezdan O. in February. The court also ordered mandatory alcoholism treatment for Mileusnić.
