Gordie Howe International Bridge opens connecting Detroit and Windsor

The Gordie Howe International Bridge, a major $5.7 billion infrastructure project, has officially opened, connecting Detroit, Michigan, and Windsor, Ontario. The cable-stayed bridge spans 2.5 kilometers across the Detroit River and features six lanes for vehicle traffic, along with dedicated walkways for pedestrians and cyclists.

As the longest cable-stayed bridge in the Americas, the structure is a significant engineering achievement. The construction was managed by the Bridging North America consortium, which includes the Spanish company ACS and its subsidiary Flatiron Dragados. The consortium holds a 30-year concession to operate the bridge as a toll facility.

The project includes extensive road improvements, such as the Michigan Interchange and connections to the Herb Gray Parkway in Canada. While the opening is expected to boost trade, enhance automotive and manufacturing logistics, and reduce border wait times, the project arrives amid ongoing trade and tariff tensions between the United States and Canada.
