Gordie Howe International Bridge records 270,000 crossings in first full month

The Gordie Howe International Bridge recorded more than 270,000 crossings during its first full month of operation in August. According to Statistics Canada, this included nearly 135,000 return trips by Canadian residents and 101,000 trips by U.S. residents. Additionally, 34,800 transport trucks used the bridge to enter Canada during the month.

The bridge, which connects Windsor and Detroit, opened to traffic on July 27. In comparison, other major Windsor border crossings—the Ambassador Bridge and the Windsor-Detroit Tunnel—saw 348,000 inbound trips in August, representing a decrease of over 35 per cent compared to August 2025.

While Canadian residents’ return trips from the United States by air and automobile rose to 2.6 million in August—a nine per cent increase over the previous year—the figure remains below the 3.3 million trips recorded in August 2024. Data suggests cross-border travel had previously declined following the start of a trade war between the U.S. and Canada.
