Poundland may be sold again following Gordon Brothers' £1 takeover

Gordon Brothers, the US-based investment firm, is reportedly in discussions with advisers regarding a potential sale of the UK discount retailer Poundland. This comes approximately 13 months after the firm acquired the company from Pepco Group for a symbolic price of £1 (or 1 euro) in July 2025.

Since the takeover, Poundland has undergone significant restructuring to address financial difficulties. The company’s workforce was reduced from approximately 16,000 to 12,000 employees, and its store estate was downsized from over 800 to around 600 locations. Financial reports for the fiscal year ending September 2024 showed a pre-tax loss of £79 million, with revenue declining 2.5% to £1.8 billion.

Despite these challenges, the retailer has attempted a turnaround by returning to its core value proposition, with roughly 60% of its stock priced at the £1 mark as of early 2026. The company also recently announced plans to open its first new store in two years at Lakeside as part of a broader range re-invention and investment in seasonal and general merchandise.
