Friedrich Merz faces record-low popularity and rising AfD support

Chancellor Friedrich Merz is facing significant political challenges in Germany, marked by record-low popularity and internal party friction. According to the latest ZDF-Politbarometer, Merz’s personal approval rating has dropped to a record low of -1.9. The survey also indicates that approximately 80 percent of respondents believe the CDU does not fully support him, with 67 percent of CDU/CSU supporters expressing similar doubts.

In the voting intention projections, the AfD has emerged as the leading party with 27 percent, followed by the CDU/CSU at 22 percent. The Greens and SPD follow with 14 percent and 12 percent, respectively. Additionally, 75 percent of respondents oppose the proposed abolition of the 'Rente mit 63' pension reform.

Political tension is further heightened by criticism from opposition parties and within the CDU. The Greens and Die Linke have accused Merz of inaction regarding the climate crisis, specifically citing his perceived lack of presence during recent heatwaves, droughts, and forest fires. Internally, Rhineland-Palatinate Minister President Gordon Schnieder has criticized Merz for a poorly executed cabinet reshuffle. Furthermore, a controversy has emerged following a 10,000 euro donation from CDU local politician Bernd Prange to the AfD, an incident that has prompted calls for clarification from SPD leader Lars Klingbeil.
