Gorée Island: A strategic historical site off the coast of Senegal

Gorée Island, located approximately 3.5 kilometers off the coast of Dakar, Senegal, serves as a significant historical and strategic site in West Africa. The island's location provided a protected anchorage that made it a vital point for maritime control and trade routes across the Atlantic between the 15th and 19th centuries.

Historically, the island was a site of intense competition among European powers, including the Portuguese, Dutch, English, and French. This period of colonial expansion left a lasting impact on the island's architecture and defensive structures. While Gorée is internationally recognized as a symbol of the Atlantic slave trade, its historical structures reflect various eras of occupation.

For example, the Fort d’Estrées was constructed by the French between 1852 and 1856, following the 1848 abolition of slavery in French colonies. Today, the island remains a popular destination for visitors, offering historical museums, colorful streets, and coastal landscapes, though travelers must navigate specific ferry requirements and security checks to access the island from the mainland.
