Gorj Environmental Guard chief targeted in anti-corruption probe

Anti-corruption prosecutors have launched a criminal investigation into five inspectors at the Gorj Environmental Guard, including the institution's chief, Gheorghe Sanda. On Thursday morning, authorities conducted raids at the agency's headquarters and the residences of those targeted.

The investigation focuses on how inspectors conducted environmental controls. Authorities suspect that officials received instructions regarding which parties to sanction and which to overlook, effectively ignoring irregularities. Prosecutors are reportedly utilizing audio and video recordings as evidence. While documents have been seized, no immediate measures have been taken against the suspects.

Cristina Merfu, spokesperson for the Gorj County Agency for Environmental Protection, confirmed that access to the building has been restricted during the investigation. She noted that such a situation is unprecedented for the institution.
