Gornji horizonti hydroelectric project impacts Neretva river basin
The Gornji horizonti hydroelectric project in Bosnia and Herzegovina is raising concerns among scientists and environmentalists regarding its impact on the Neretva river basin. The project, conceived over sixty years ago, involves constructing hydroelectric plants, reservoirs, canals, and tunnels to redirect water from the karst fields of eastern Herzegovina to the Trebišnjica system for electricity production.
Critics warn that this permanent redirection of water from one basin to another could exacerbate existing water scarcity. This is particularly concerning given the increasing frequency of droughts and the impacts of climate change, which are already affecting river levels and water distribution in the region.
