Gospel of Matthew parable emphasizes importance of forgiveness

Religious texts and commentaries focus on the Parable of the Unforgiving Servant from the Gospel of Matthew (18:23-35). The parable describes a king who forgives a massive debt owed by a servant, only for that same servant to refuse to forgive a much smaller debt owed to him by a fellow servant.

In response to the servant's lack of mercy, the king punishes him. The teaching emphasizes that divine forgiveness is linked to human compassion, suggesting that individuals must forgive others from the heart. Commentaries, such as those by Saint John Chrysostom, interpret the command to forgive ‘seventy-seven times’ not as a numerical limit, but as a call for infinite and continuous forgiveness rooted in love and philanthropy.
