Gospić air quality station monitors illegal waste site
An air quality monitoring station has been installed at the PPK Velebit site in Gospić to track environmental conditions during the remediation of an illegal waste landfill. The station, set up by experts from the Split-Dalmatia County Institute of Public Health at the request of the City of Gospić, measures PM2.5 and PM10 particulate matter, as well as the presence of heavy metals such as arsenic, cadmium, lead, and nickel.
Initial measurement results for October 10 and 11 indicate that the air quality remains within satisfactory parameters. PM10 levels were recorded at 8.25 μg/m3 and 18.36 μg/m3, well below the daily limit of 50 μg/m3. PM2.5 levels were also below the annual target value. Concentrations of heavy metals were also found to be within prescribed limits.
The monitoring project involves Ličko-senjska County and the Environmental Protection and Energy Efficiency Fund. While the equipment was initially deployed for a one-month period, authorities plan to continue measurements for at least one year to ensure public safety and provide transparent data to citizens throughout the remediation process.
