Gospić je naš dom organizes protest in Zagreb over illegal waste

The civic initiative ‘Gospić je naš dom’ (Gospić is Our Home) is organizing a protest in Zagreb on September 5 under the slogan ‘Walk for Lika, Walk for Croatia’. The demonstration aims to alert state institutions to the presence of tens of thousands of tons of illegally dumped waste in the city of Gospić.

Various civil society associations, public figures, and intellectuals have expressed support for the movement, emphasizing that the right to a healthy environment is a fundamental human right. Supporters argue that the issue of hazardous waste accumulation has been neglected by responsible authorities and should not be reduced to partisan political disputes.

Conversely, some political representatives and commentators have criticized the protest, attempting to frame it as an anti-Croatian gathering or a politically motivated project. Critics of these labels argue that such rhetoric is an attempt to discredit genuine citizen concerns regarding environmental safety and institutional inaction.
