Gospić waste remediation: Non-hazardous waste removal begins
Remediation efforts at the former PPK Velebit site in Gospić have entered a new phase, with the removal of approximately 650 tons of non-hazardous waste in large bags. This waste is being transported to Holcim and Nexe cement plants to be utilized as alternative fuel in the clinker production process. The Ministry of Environmental Protection and Green Transition has defended this procedure, stating that the waste has been verified by multiple laboratories and that the process follows strict environmental permits. The Ministry also dismissed claims from political actors that the waste is being improperly reclassified or merely moved from one location to another.
Simultaneously, technical work is underway to stabilize the site. The company Kostak reported that they are currently excavating anchor channels and plan to begin installing a protective geomembrane next week, weather permitting. This membrane is intended to prevent rainwater from penetrating the buried waste until final remediation is complete.
However, the situation remains contentious. The civic initiative 'Gospić je naš dom' has raised concerns regarding dust, unpleasant odors, and a lack of public communication regarding the excavation methods. Additionally, a working group from the Istria County Assembly is seeking transparency, requesting detailed data from the State Inspectorate and the Environmental Fund to monitor air quality and the overall remediation plan. The issue has also reached the national parliament, where discussions have emerged regarding the classification of intelligence reports from the SOA concerning the waste situation.
